Dear reader,
My former spiritual teacher often spoke of sandhi, a Sanskrit word that translates roughly to "a point between"—a threshold, a liminal space.
Examples of sandhis include dusk, dawn, pregnancy, highways, cocoons, shifts in fashion and design, the calm before the storm, the rumble of a stampede or a firetruck in the distance, that moment when it’s almost but not quite a new season.
According to many traditions—and in my own experience—these moments hold immense power. The veil between worlds feels thinner; spirit, ancestors, and possibility are more accessible.
Since I was a child, twilight has always brought a kind of mystical nostalgia, a yearning for something I can't quite place. Do you ever feel that? It's as if, in these in-between moments, we are closer to something essential.
Some meditation practices center on that tiny, suspended moment between breaths—after the exhale and before the inhale—where a quiet something emerges.
And then there are airports—the labyrinthine limbos of travel.
…
I was just in one, flying from my home in Portland to visit family in my hometown of Atlanta. Fun fact: the Atlanta airport is the busiest in the world—not just the country, but the world. If you've been, you’ve likely navigated the sprawling, inefficient, convoluted nonsense that is its design (much like Atlanta itself—sorry, y’all!).
The idea for this post actually came to me while trudging through the extended ordeal of leaving the airport. It took 4.5 hours to fly 2,200 miles from Portland to Atlanta, but then another 1.5 hours just to reach my rental car.
As I rode the tram, staring listlessly out the window at the concrete expanse after winding through walkways, escalators, and endless corridors, I could hear my inner child scream, Are we there yet?!
…
And then I remembered: this is a sandhi.
These in-between spaces, this lack being ‘there,’ are easy to brush off as being nowhere. But sandhis carry a special opportunity. They are their own ‘there’ and not to be discounted.
The deep conversation facilitated by a long road trip. The brilliant idea that comes to you in the shower. Bumping into an old friend on a subway car.
These are all gifts of the sandhi.
…
In business, a sandhi might appear in the agonizing space of a rebrand—when you’ve outgrown your current model or messaging and are figuring out what’s next.
I find myself there now
Most people don’t really know what a Content Strategist does, and even if they do, it doesn’t quite capture the totality of what I offer. Here’s a recent voice memo from a client:
"I keep trying to explain to my friends what you do, but I don't know what to call you. I know you're a Content Strategist, but that doesn’t quite cover it. I just tell them, ‘I talk to Rebecca, she sorts my brain, she gives me direction, and I’m more focused than ever.’”
Some might label that as Business or Marketing Coach. But I’ve always bristled at describing myself that way because my work centers on messaging and strategy rather than mindset.
So here I am, in the messy middle—the sandhi.
I could gripe about it, or I could lean into it as a powerful time for transformation. I can get creative, brainstorm with colleagues, and revel in envisioning the future.
…
We are in a sandhi as a species.
The worst effects of climate change are looming. Who do we want to be as we face this together? Where should we put our energy now? What possibilities can we imagine?
I can’t stress enough how powerfully reorienting my client Jess Serrante’s podcast, We Are The Great Turning is. It’s all about what it takes to live with our hearts and integrity intact in this time of global crisis.
And speaking of liminal spaces, Jess is currently leading a 5-month coaching journey called Leading In Liminality. It’s for leaders to be held in community and supported to lead with integrity in this transition from a world rooted in dominance, extraction, and industrial growth to one that's just, life-sustaining, and life-affirming. November 2024 - March 2025.
…
And here in the United States, we are in a sandhi as a nation.
The president-elect has not yet taken office. What will we do with these two precious months leading to inauguration day?
Will we check out, panic, post scathing comments on Instagram, scowl at our neighbor who voted the wrong way?
We could. Or, we could choose a sacred pause, honor this potent moment, and ask, What is ours to do? And listen for the answers while the veil is thin and full of wisdom.
With you in the in-between,
Rebecca

🎧 Listen While You Work
A weekly focus-friendly album recommendation, featuring instrumental tracks or songs with non-English lyrics to fuel your creativity and concentration.
This week’s pick: Keira by Susso
“Susso, aka bassist / producer Huw Bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the Mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to Gambia.”
This album is great for moving energy and freshening up the space. It grooves, it flows, it lifts, it shakes. Please enjoy.
That’s all for now!

Rebecca
